My Hilarious First Bungee Jumping Experience

Bungee Jump is there in the list of every thrill seeker’s adventure bucket list. It is right below skydiving and somewhere above Paragliding. The joy, thrill, and fear of falling from a height of 80+ feet are enough to send a chill down your spine.

In year 2010, I was studying in Bangalore when news started floating that the city would have its own bungee jump platform. It was being made near Bannerghatta National Park and I had made sure that I’ll experience it as soon as it starts. The day this platform started operating was the day when it recorded its first death. The first person who took the free fall was the first person to die as the rope collapsed. My dreams of experiencing this thrill went into oblivion for a while.

I had the taste of my first bungee jump at Jumpin Heights, Rishikesh. After two of my cousin sisters did it with utmost swag, there was no chance in the world that I experience it myself. Jumpin Heights takes pride as India’s First Extreme Adventure Zone. This is the highest bungee platform in the country. Jumpin Heights in Rishikesh is the pioneer of bungee jumping in India and has a fully equipped team of experts from Australia and New Zealand.

*In my head*: “I should shout that dialogue from Bajirao Mastani or give a flying kiss to camera as I fall, not able to decide.”
*In reality *: “What the hell are you doing, are you crazy? This could be the last thing that you’d be doing. They’ll play this jump video at your obituary.”
Nevermind; I am already falling.

Trust me, when I tell you that I am a veteran of doing things motivated by superior level of stupidity and impulse. Whether it is rock climbing in Hampi or rafting through ice cold water at Beas River in Manali, even a solo trek through 8 feet of snow in a failed attempt to visit Chandrakhani Pass, I have done it all. But the kind of fear that a bungee platform sends in your head is unmatchable. When you are climbing a boulder in Hampi, you know that at max you’ll break a few bones if you fall. There is a life jacket while you are rafting so you know that at least you’ll float until the rescuers arrive. When it comes to bungee, the fear doesn’t happen until you are standing on the edge looking below from that height. That is the point where you realize that this is sheer stupidity. One mistake and your body won’t be found, you can die before you hit the ground and they’ll only find your dead body in a pulp.

Thankfully, by the time these thoughts run through your head, the instructor already pushes you from the platform. This is the most thrilling extreme adventure that I have been involved in my life. When you fall, the world becomes silent. That is the time when you can see the world around you in 360 degrees. You return back to your senses, you find yourself hanging by a rope falling towards the ground. Then you find yourself being pulled upwards and this continues for a while. The 60 seconds of your romance with gravity ends and the team below pulls you to the ground.

My best adventure will be remembered as a hilarious attempt to kill myself. Check the video below, you’ll realize that I chickened out at the last moment. This is the worst bungee jump pose ever. People who saw it have laughed their ass off, although most of them have accepted that they won’t do it even if they are paid a million dollars.

I climbed that stupid hilly path, reached the Bungee station, took my certificate, badge and video of the jump and then left for Rishikesh.

What is the ideal time to do the Bungee Jump

The bungee station operates from March to early June and then restarts in the month of September and continues till January

The nerve wracking jump is actually the easier part of the entire activity. Once you are down, you are asked to trek to the jump station/restaurant. It is a steep climb of half a kilometer and is the worst walk that you’d ever do especially after you are already dead tired and want to get a sleep after spending half your day in the hot and humid climate of Rishikesh.

You bring back my memories of the same jump, same site some 7 years ago. I too had the same feelings as expressed by you before the jump. DEW was quite famous during those days and I told the instructor also to paste a big board in the open space just before one makes a jump so that one gets motivated to make a Thoofani jump. The point when your legs trembled is the most courageous moment as it is the time when probably 90% of the people feel, why I opted for pay, feel terrified, jump and probably vanish from this world in the first place. Very nice write-up. Kudos. See my video too (though I made a perfect jump)
