Yes, It is possible while keeping a job – Here is how you can do it

When I had left my job in June 2017, I had no idea about how long I will spend my time travelling and making it a full time affair. A lot of people have since asked me for ways to move into my world and I have always suggested them to continue travelling while having a full time job.

Before I moved out of my city life, there was no force in the world that would stop me from travelling. I used to travel at-least two weekends every month and despite not having sponsored trip and a blog, I was exploring weekend escapes and quick trek destinations without any issues.

Yes, travelling after leaving a job does sound exciting but you can also make the best out of your wanderlust while being in a job and at the same time, have a constant source of money.

Some tricks that will certainly help you explore the world without resigning from your well paying jobs are –

Stop buying stupid sh%t

Living city life means that you’ll end up buying things that you may need for a while and then it is kept in the closet for life. Saving money is one of the major challenges of travelling while keeping a job. When I was working a full time job in one of the costliest cities in India, I was making sure that I save money for travel by skipping upon a thing or another. So more you avoid spending money on things that you believe that they won’t useful after two three months, you’ll find money to book bus tickets, book hostel stay and travel.

Buy second hand stuff

Second hand item market is growing rapidly. You find something old in absolutely fine condition and ready to be used for the time being till you want. It goes perfectly for clothes, household items and anything that you may not use that frequently. You can skip upon a new bag and buy a used one. You can also rent things like furniture, air conditioners and refrigerator if you just need them for two or three months. This will help you save money and at the same time you’ll also reduce your carbon footprint.

Make a list of quick weekend escapes

Now that you have sorted ideas on saving money, you can start listing the places where you can visit on a weekend. This way you’ll make the best out of your free time between Friday evening and Monday morning when you can return and join the office. Combining trekking trips, hill stations, heritage spots, and similar places will give you enough destinations to cover. You can also return to the same place again and again for different activities.

Take Sabbaticals

A number of travellers I meet are the ones who have take sabbaticals every year in order to find the lost mojo in their life. Sabbatical doesn’t mean that you have to resign from your job and instead you simply choose to go on an unpaid leave for a certain time period. In the time when mental health and unbalanced work life are becoming issues, this is one essential requirement needed to be considered for personal well being.

Make the best out of your PL

May be you are not a sabbatical type of person, but still your company will give you a certain number of leaves. These paid leaves are the best medium to enjoy a minimum of two long term leaves and a few short one if you know how to make use of extended weekends. PL will keep your job intact and will give you freedom to resume the work once you are back to your regular life after a rewarding vacation.

Volunteer occasionally

Yes, sabbaticals and PLs are okay but that adds nothing to your travels other than ticking out a few destinations from your checklist. Volunteering with various NGOs will also help you develop a resume for the next job and do something meaningful while keeping the passion of travelling alive.

Assist your friends on their outdoor projects

It is fun to join your friends on their projects that may require a plenty of time in the outdoors. May be they are shooting a short film, or are conducting a survey in a nearby village; it will be great experience to join them and see a certain place from their perspective.

Remember, it is possible to continue your passion of travelling without leaving your job. The digital nomads have a source of income that feeds their passion but it also comes with certain regulations and boundations that one must be ready for. This is a topic to be left for another time, for now, try implementing these tips in your regular life and see how they work for you.
