Ignited minds: Then and Now

I was reading APJ Kalam’s ignited minds. This book is simply a masterpiece and has a lot to tell. So coming to the point, this book had a paragraph which told about how Thumba became a space research station in 1962 and the story made me think about this country’s mindset now and then.
The paragraph says
“In 1962, Dr. Sarabhai and Dr. Bhabha were looking for a site to establish the space research station in the equatorial region. Thumba in Kerala was found most suitable as it was near the equatorial region and was ideally suited for ionospheric research. The locality was however inhabited by thousands of fishermen living in the villages there. It also had a beautiful church called St. Mary Magdalene church and the Bishop’s house. As such the acquisition of the land did not move any further.

Dr. Sarabhai met the bishop, His Excellency Rev. Dr. Peter Bernard Pereira on a Saturday and requested transfer of property. The bishop smiled and asked him to meet him the next day. In the Sunday morning service the bishop told the congregation, ‘My children, I have a famous scientist with me who wants our church and the place that I live for space science and research. Science seeks truth that enriches life. The higher level of religion is spirituality. The spiritual leaders seek the help of the almighty to bring peace to human minds. In short what Vikram is doing and what I am doing are the same- Both science and spirituality seeks Almighty’s blessings for human prosperity in mind and body. Children can we give them god’s abode for a scientific mission? There was silence for a while followed by a hearty ‘Amen’ from the congregation which made the whole church reverberate.”

How if it was 2013 and some scientist or industrialist had to go through the same phase imagine what would have happened.
Two industrialists were looking for a site to establish their project. After a continuous search they found a suitable region. The locality was however inhibited by thousands but the project could have provided the locals with lot of job opportunities. After the work progressed some local politicians from opposition party fueled the residents of that area that this project is going to take away their house and food. Locals start protesting and crowd slowly goes violent, as a result many die in police firing. New channels make this issue their top priority with all kind of breaking news. Arnab Goswami invites these industrialists on his show and doesn’t let them speak while Rajdeep Sardesai types a senti good night tweet along with it. These industrialists had already paid heavy bribe to the ruling party for this project to take shape so for them it becomes more difficult.
The issue is then raised by Aamir Khan on Satyamev Jayate season 2 where stories brings tear in his eyes. Anna Hazare starts another Anshan on this issue while Arvind Kejriwal calls for a press conference. Baba Ramdev visits the village with some spare salwar kameez for emergency and Raj Thakrey announces that the project failed because the villagers were North Indians. Crowd in Delhi holds candle light march at India Gate in protest and police lathicharges them because the opposition party in that state was an ally to the ruling government in center. This news becomes a top trend on twitter and people band up with online protests. Silly standups find more jokes to tweet while on facebook people support and oppose the movement by posting pictures on with subjects like 1 like = 1 protest and other stupid posts like they always do. On Whatsapp and Blackberry change DP movement is started to protest the issue while no one has idea what actual issue is. Countless blog-posts come up telling how they support and oppose it and get a lot of hits. After a week India loses another cricket match and this issue vanishes from twitter and then slowly from everywhere.
What I wanted to say is that from 1962 to 2012 how much people have changed in this country. While a bishop agreed to give land for development of this country if it was today’s time some fatwa or morcha would have issued against it. All we know is to outrage, what is the reason behind it is something no one cares about it.
